CUBAN MOTION IN LATIN/SALSA DANCES

Published Friday, December 11, 2009 7:00 am

Cuban Motion, the characteristic hip motion that gives Latin/Salsa dances their sensual flavor, looks different in each dance. A social dance like Merengue has a steady, constant tempo. The dancers' hip motion is the same, with the weight shift on each count (1,2.3.4 etc.) taking the same amount of time. Dances like Rumba, Mambo, Salsa and Cha Cha combine "slow" steps with "quick" steps and even "holds", so the speed of the weight transfer varies. Combining slow movement with fast movement, give the dancers' Cuban Motion a different look depending on the dance and foot rhythm of each pattern. Ask your teacher for full information.
